Policy
NHFC has a policy of granting scholarships to singers who can contribute to the diversity, effectiveness and vocal quality of the Chorus, as well as assist with rehearsals and tour tasks. Beginning with the 2017 registrations, a scholarship fee was incorporated into the pricing for all participants; the funds raised go toward the cost of the trip for those awarded scholarships, with any excess retained in a restricted account for future trips.
Eligibility
Any singer may apply, even if they have received a scholarship before. If a scholarship recipient goes on the extension trip, the board reserves the right to deduct the extension cost from the award. Board members may not apply for scholarships.
Application process
The application form is posted to the NHFC website, linking to a Google Forms document, in the summer prior to registration, and must be submitted two weeks before the November 1 award date. On submission, the Scholarship committee, the Conductor, and the Board President receive an email with the submission details.
Fee and award amounts
The scholarship fee is set by the Board along with the estimated tour cost. As an example, the 2017 awards amounted to slightly more than 50% of the trip cost, split equally among 5 applicants — NHFC does not collect financial information, so there is no current mechanism to award different amounts based on need.
Award process
Applications are reviewed by the Conductor, Board President, and Scholarship Committee for musical background and willingness to promote NHFC’s mission. Recommendations go to the full Board for a vote. Applicants are notified by email on November 1, with a formal award letter to follow from the Treasurer.
Closing and follow-up
Once scholarships are awarded, remaining funds are retained for future tours, and the Committee reviews the process for improvements to recommend to the Board.
