Iceland Extension Itinerary, July 8 – July 12, 2022
Often overlooked by visitors, the East Fjords represent the very best of what Iceland has to offer — dramatic scenery, remote fishing villages, sharp mountain peaks, lively reindeer herds, and some of the country’s best folklore.
Day 8: July 8, Friday
Sigló to Möðrudalur to Stuðlagil Canyon, overnight in Egilsstaðir. Lunch at Iceland’s highest farm, then on to Stuðlagil where the glacial river Jökulsá á Brú runs through one of Iceland’s largest collections of basalt columns — only recently revealed as the river level fell. (B, L)
Day 9: July 9, Saturday
Borgarfjörður Eystri and its puffin colony — upwards of 10,000 nests from mid-April through mid-August — plus further exploration of the East Fjords. Return to Egilsstaðir. (B, L)
Day 10: July 10, Sunday
Fáskrúðsfjörður, a coastal village with French fishing heritage; Petra’s stone collection in Stöðvarfjörður; Gleðivík in Djúpivogur to see Sigurður Guðmundsson’s 34 granite egg sculptures. Overnight at the working farm Smyrlabjörg. (B, L, D)
Day 11: July 11, Monday
Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon; Kirkjubæjarklaustur’s basalt “church floor” and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon; the black sand beaches of Vík; Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. Overnight in Selfoss. (B, L)
Day 12: July 12, Tuesday
Along the S&uethur;strandarveg coastal road and the volcanic Reykjanes peninsula (passing Geldingardalur, site of the March 2021 eruption) to the Blue Lagoon, then on to the airport. (B)
